How I Finally Fixed My Skin After Years of Hormonal Acne

I want to start by saying that clear skin at 25 is not a given. It's not luck. And for a lot of us, it's definitely not easy. I spent most of my early twenties with painful, deep cystic acne along my jawline and chin — the kind that no amount of face wash or spot treatment could touch. If that's you right now, I see you.

What I Tried That Didn't Work

I tried everything. Drugstore cleansers, expensive serums, DIY masks from TikTok, cutting out dairy, drinking a gallon of water a day. Some of it helped a little. Most of it didn't. The hardest part was spending money I didn't have on products that promised results and delivered nothing. By 24, I was wearing full coverage foundation every day just to leave the house.

The Turning Point

What finally worked was going to a dermatologist and being honest about how much this was affecting me. She explained that my acne was hormonal — no topical product was going to fix what was happening internally. We talked about options, I started a treatment plan, and within three months my skin was clearer than it had been since high school.

My Current Routine

My routine now is honestly simple. Gentle cleanser morning and night, a good moisturizer with SPF during the day, retinol at night a few times a week, and that's basically it. The less I do to my skin, the happier it is. I stopped layering seven products and my skin thanked me for it.

What I Wish I Knew Sooner

Skincare is not one-size-fits-all. What works for your favorite influencer might wreck your skin. What worked for your best friend might do nothing for you. The best thing you can do is listen to your own skin and find a dermatologist you trust.

And if you're in the thick of it right now — the breakouts, the scarring, the days where you don't want to look in the mirror — it does get better. You're not broken. Your skin doesn't define your worth.
